Our world is filled with educational experiences and life lessons everywhere we look. One of the best places to find such experiences is in nature. Nothing can compare to the learning that happens when watching a baby bird hatch, and such miraculous moments are certain to be remembered for a long time to come.
In order to get closer to nature and take advantage of the lessons offered up by Mother Earth you must get out into nature and surround yourself with the wonder of it all. One excellent way to go about this is by taking frequent camping trips. The warm weather is here now, and camping season is in full swing. It’s time to pull out the gear, set up camp, and enjoy the great outdoors with your kiddos. You won’t regret doing so when you see their curiosity pique as they view some of the awesome spectacles offered up by our beautiful planet.
Here are just a few wonderful activities you can do with your children while camping in order to enhance their educational experience.
Grab some binoculars and a book or two about birds and settle in for some relaxing bird watching. Look the birds you find up in your guide books and learn about the way they live. Habitat, eating habits, predators, and migration or hibernatition habits are all good discussion topics when bird watching. Also take time to discuss the similarities and differences between the various kinds of birds.
Scavenger Hunt Hike
By putting together a list of plants and animals for your child to find while out hiking you encourage them to be more observant during your nature walk and really take in their surroundings. This often leads to closer inspection of the fauna and flora of the place as well as interesting observations and conversation topics. Give your child a camera to record what they see. You will likely be fascinated as you look at the world through the eyes of a young child.
Fishing is an excellent skill to have no matter who you are and camping is the perfect time to teach the kids. If you take your children fishing you can expand upon the experience by taking with them about the various types of fish they catch. A book or two will likely come in handy during discussions so you can answer any questions that may arise.
Bring a long a book about constellations as any books you think your kids might enjoy about the planets, moon, or outer space in general. A flashlight is also handy to have for this activity. Settle down outside at night and gaze up at the stars and moon. See if you can find any planets, discuss the phases of the moon, and read about the various constellations you find. This is a great way to spark your child’s interst in space and as an added bonus you’ll create some awesome memories while doing so.
